What is a Hopper Barge Used For?

Hopper barges are usually unpropelled/nonmechanical boats designed for carrying bulky, dry materials, like rocks, sand, soil and construction debris. There are two types of hopper barges, raked and box. Raked hopper barges move through the water slightly faster than the box style barges, but both are designed to carry the same types of materials.

Damco’s current inventory ranges includes hopper barges between 195‘ long all the way up to 200‘. These types of barges can be as narrow as 195‘ for working in tighter inland waterways and sometimes as wide as 200‘ or more.
